Hi, how are you. Good question.
I think it would be great if you got your degree in business before you ever decided to open your own salon. However, in order to know the industry, hair school is going to be a necessity, and you are not going to get around that.
I am speaking from experience. I went to college and got my bachelor's in Communications. I know its not a "business degree" per se, but we did have to take business related classes. So I do have an understanding of the management side of any business.
I have always wanted to be a hair stylist and open my own salon as well. I am now at cosmetolgy school part time. You need to know how to be a hairdresser in order to manage/ own a salon.
Wouldn't you want to know the inner workings of a salon before you bought one anyways? You will have to be up on the latest products, for example color....You will also need to be familiar with the latest cuts, techniques out there so that you can help your staff with their continuing education. Also, if your staff is short, how would you be able to help them if you know nothing of hair, nails, or other esthetic services? You are not going to start off right away with a huge high powered salon. I know you are speaking of a soap opera, but even management professionals in the industry have started off in beauty school. Do you want your hair dressing staff to know more than you do? Management should always be be one step ahead, especially when it comes to supporting their staff. You will definitely be more respected if you know the basics.
I would again, suggest that you pursue a college degree first because it is always good to have one under your belt. And especially for you, because you are considering management. But, most salon industrys already have courses in the management side of the business, especially Regis Corp. But you do have to go to beauty school first.
And if you are really not serious about the beauty industry, definitely do not start out with that first. But for me, I wish that I would have gone to beauty school first because I always knew that I wanted to be a hairstylist.
Good luck in your career endeavors, and you will be fine!

IT would definately help you to know your business from the inside before you start. If you are dead set against being trained as a hair dresser then you really ought to do business studies. Chances are you will need a loan to start up your business and a bank will take you more seriously if you have studied in an area related to the business you set up.
