It seems most RPG's for the PC has gone online, & most of the pricing is rather steep. For PC roleplayers, what single player RPG for the computer is really good yet doesn't have steep tech requirements?

Erm... the first two answers seem to have confused RPG with MMO...

The answer depends on how "classic" you are willing to go. If you're a star wars fan, Knights of the Old Republic (KotOR) is fairly good and quite popular. It's story driven with party based combat. Technically the combat is turn driven, however it's handled in such a fluid way you typically won't notice. Most of the quests have multiple solutions. There is a sequal, but the sequal was pushed out too early so many things were left out (noticably), so most people don't find the sequal as fun.

Gothic and Gothic 2 have low requirements and were fun for me. Gothic 3 is quite a bit higher on the system reqs but is still managable. This series is set in a fantasy world. The game has both first person and 3rd person trailbehind modes (I'd suggest using the second). There really isn't any party combat involved with the Gothic series, however there are parts where NPCs will assist you in combat. Most quests have multiple solutions. One of the things I find fun about the gothic series is the fact that people tend to remember you for your crimes and they typically get mad at you when you walk into their homes uninvited.

There's plenty of other examples and differnt types of RPGs, especially if you're willing to play the classics like Betrayal at Krondor, but the two series I listed above are my personal favorites that won't require an emulator like DOSBox.

I would truly reccomend Diablo II. Getting the expansion isn't burning that much of a hole in your pockets after Blizzard introduced the Diablo BattleChest, which also comes with the original Diablo which started it all.
It's fun, addictive, has a decent plot, and has great replay value. You may find yourself playing it again days after swearing off it.
If that doesn't suit you, you may also try downloading a emulator for handheld consoles (e.g. Gameboy, Nintendo DS, etc.). Although downloading the roms are considered to be illegal if you do not own the games personally, it is practically impossible to tell if you do or do not own any games at all.

Hope I have been of help.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Not online so no fees, and you can probably get it AND at least one expansion for as much as any other RPG because it's like 4 years old now. Great game, you just get it for cheap because it came out in 2002.

Seriously, if you haven't played it, you're missing out.

Ive heard about Neverwinter nights 2 was by far amazing.

But id say go with diablo and diablo 2 get the battle chest.

Best fun ive had in years but you can play it online. And Single Player.

Baldur's Gate is AWESOME. You create your player, you choose from many kinds of characters, pictures, etc... and the story is very VERY good.

Diablo 2 is also amazing: more zombie-head bashing than the previous.
These two are old but... CLASSICS. You won't need more than a Pentium with around 128 RAM.
