It's so frustrating, I just want to make sure she's ok because she's been sleeping for a while and I try to be sooooo quiet and just slightly open the door and peek in and sure enough once I come downstairs I hear her waking up??? What's the deal? Should I not check on her? She's only 5 months old.

Actually, I have 3 yr old, a very loud one and we don't try to really be quiet. But I do put a fan on in her room to create some white noise, maybe the opening of the door cause some change in the fan noise???

why don't you just use a baby monitor?? They have so many different types now... video.. or the one that has a sensor that goes under the mattress so it picks up on the babies movement and breathing..
You could probably find a good used one on craigslist or at a local baby consignment shop.. that way you can be sure she is okay without disturbing her..

I still check on my soon to be 14yr old. I also have a 10 month old and your 5 month old should be able to sleep through noise, atleast mine did. It could be the door waking her up have you tried buying a baby monitor and using that? I live in a two story home also and the sounds down stairs arent as loud upstairs as we'd like to think they are. Try laying her down with the door open. I know that the door never woke my son I dont shut the door ever while he's in there sleeping but there is a floor board right next to his crib that creaks and when it makes noise I "freeze" if he wakes up Im not taking him out of the bed if he's not had a good nap never have and never will.

I don't think it has anything to do with noise, they somehow sense when you are watching them. My daughter is seven months, and I just got some really good advice, "Stop peeking". I was waking my daughter up at night by continuously checking on her. Now she sleeps so much better and so do I. Your daughter is fine. She'll be six months soon and the sids factor will be pretty much gone. Let her sleep. If you are not going to be able to not check on her, invest in a video monitor. Then she can sleep and you can check on her without waking her up. They have them on ebay used for cheaper.

She might just be a light sleeper. My daughter is and she takes after her mommy. I wake up whenever someone just whispers. I had such a hard time when my daughter was a newborn because I woke up with every squeak she made. I slept in the same room with her for six months and now she sleeps in her own room. I don't check on her I just put a monitor next to her and carry the receiver around with me. While SIDS is a reality and it is important to be concerned about it I think many parents blow it out of proportion (not to say that this is your problem) and think that their baby will die if they leave them alone for a couple of hours.

My son is 2 months and I've found the louder we are the better he sleeps during the day. He loves the hairdryer and hoover. Try not to be so quiet. Hope this helps.

I've done that too.
Maybe not shut the door. It sounds like you might keep it TOO quiet during her naptimes and the slightest noise wakes her up.
It's fine to check on her - every mother does it.
