you might laugh but a clip round the ear was very painful, I got a few from my parents. Also, when I was at school - a convent school run by nuns - our worst punishment was to get a lash of the cane on our left hand (or the non-writing hand). It HURT, but was used rarely and for something really bad or a repeat offence. I only got this a few times and learned my lesson and got no sympathy from my mum - her attitude was that I must have deserved it and she backed the school!
Having said that, I got an excellent education, none of us got into trouble and we all made good lives. How many people can say that? So maybe discipline has its place ..

well, lets look at reality, you see kids throwing all kinds of temper tantrums in public. Detention centers are just as full as jails. All schools have had to adopt crazy policies to protect the good kids from the bad.
I'm 26, and I would never have imagined doing some of the things I see 10 yr olds doing at that age.
The more rights they have taken from the parents the worse the kids have become. You don't even begin to realize this until you become a parent and you just want to keep your kids locked in the house all the time because you don't want them to act like the other heathens.
So yeah, I can imagine how different kids were when parents were aloud to discipline them. I wish I had raised my kids 30-40 years ago. Less dangers to worry about.

Trust me on this. You would have been deterred by the very threat of a clip round the ear, never mind the actuality. It would have been delivered in full view of your friends, family and classmates and you you would have been left praying for the earth to swallow you up. If a policeman did it, he used his rain cape and that would knock you off your feet and into the middle of the following week.
You sound just like the kind of lairy, mouthy character who would benefit from it but these days, people like you are so gutless that you would have to go crying to mummy about it, wouldn't you?

Believe me, it did work. Im not male and i never got a clip, but i was a child in the days it happened. Boys lived in fear of their fathers and the local bobby come to mention it.
I was brought up very harshly by my mother, which i would call abuse now but she disagrees. If it worked then it was an effective punishment.
It makes you wonder though. Is the aggression and violence with this generation a result of the aggression and violence shown to my generation all those years ago? Or is it because they get away with bloody murder?
My cousin reckons all children should be physically punished or they'll end up bad. "it never did me any harm."
In my opinion, if it didn't do HIM any harm then why does he continue the trend? (He's an **** hole anyway)!
I don't know.....

just a mutual respect thing,
kids of old didn't take the piss out of old folk the way they do now,the fear of a clip round the ear was ever so real,
and if you went home and told dad someone had clipped you,he would give you another because you probably deserved it.
these days you would be arrested and sued by the father of the child who was causing you misery.
bring back corporal punishment!!!

But back in their day kids had much more respect for their parents and other adults. The threat of this coming from an imposing neighbour or shop owner would probably have been enough to prevent them from doing it again.
It just shows how poorly the kids of today are raised, they have no respect for anything anymore

In day's past, young people had much more respect for their elders in society. I would have been mortified to receive such a 'clip' as a kid. Now, there is very little respect for anyone or anything. It's a different world altogether. Time back then was less demanding, & people had simpler wants & needs.
So much for 'progress'..

I suppose it would'nt hurt these days. Kids could do with a good old Skutch across the earhole. It never did us any harm to get a good hiding, Why stop it now?. No wonder kids get away with murder these days, and I mean that literally. If they brought the cane back in schools, there might be more respect and discipline. OMG you got me started now, I don't want to stop.
