It's safe to use air from a can to blow out your keyboard. It doesn't have to be done but a couple times a year if that. You can get canned air from a general electronics store (CompUSA, Best Buy, etc.)
For a home PC I do the inside of my case twice a year. I use wet wipes made for PDA screens to clean my LCD monitor. If you have an old glass tube screen look at getting an anti-static glass cleaner also sold at the above places.

I always
1] Turn the laptop over & tap it to knock out a lot of the loose dross, then
2] Use a new, unused small paintbrush to brush around & between the keys
3] Use a can of compressed air to blow it out (keep the can upright or it'll sputter)
4] For good measure, turn it over & tap it out one more time.
For the screen, a clean, soft, mildly moist cloth is excellent - don't rub, just wipe gently. Never use anything paper, as the woodpulp in the paper can damage the delicate coating.
For the finishing touch, wipe the keys with an antiseptic wipe.
By the way, do all this with the machine off & the power turned off too!
As for how often, how dirty are you? I do mine monthly, takes about 2 minutes.

They sell canned air at most office supply stores (some places it might be getting hard to find because idiotic kids were huffing it for a cheap high and freezing their lung tissue)
Be careful - I would suggest turning off the laptop, and removing the battery to make sure it is totally off - and then lightly dust it with the spray - some laptops keys come off really easily though, so don't blow too hard on them.
They make wipes specifically for LCD screens, but I usually just spray a little windex on a paper towel (rather than on the screen) and gently wipe it down.

Air cans are great for cleaning out the keboard. As far as the screen, a soft lint free cloth will get the dust fine, if you have finger prints, etc, then spray a touch of windex on the cloth and then wipe your screen. Never use paper towels or spray windex directly on the screen. It is safe to use everday, but just use as needed.

Compressed air is good for cleaning laptop keyboards and lots of other things. You can get anywhere that they sell computer supplies (Best Buy, computer store, even WalMart's computer section). How often is determined by how often it gets dirty....
They will also sell special "wipes" for cleaning LCD displays. They work better then any of the "mix your own" formulas I have found.

Yes, canned air is good. Repeat as required. They are available at any good computer store.
Be careful cleaning LCD screens. Read the manual or go to the manufacturer's web site for more info.
Do NOT use any cleaner with Ammonia, it will damage the screen.

yes, this will do with an air can, or even a portable vacum cleaner, for the screen use ordinary glass cleaner, and preferably spray on a cloth and then wipe, not directly on the screen, best clean with Laptop power off, and cords disconnected, happy cleaning... :)

Yea, it helps alot to clean the junk out of the keyboard, just be sure to use short bursts of air instead of holding down the button. You can get them at Wal-Mart, or any retail store that carries those types of things. Also, I usually use an alcohol pad to clean my screen, it works pretty well.
