All plumbing can be fixed by yourself. See what type of drain it is. The size and type. They could be plastic but with a older home it's more than likely galvanized pipe. You can replace it if it's bad but make sure you use pipe sealant or teflon tape. If its a 4 inch drain pipe which in some cases being out side the wall was added later, you can reseal the joint with soft lead. You buy it at your local hardware store then use a mallet and blunt stick or a piece of metal that has a flat surface you can get into the joint and pound the soft lead into the opening. Some times you can just repound the lead that is in there and reseal the joint. If it's a threaded galvanized pipe you can cut out the bad part and unscrew the top part and bottom part out to replace you'll need to pipes and a union but this will work. Use plenty of teflon tape or pipe sealant and retighten the new pipes back in place.

GUSHES as in sprays out into the kitchen? or Gushes in the sense of the noise it makes as Gravity is expelling the water?

Obviously there is a problem, and certainly it might take a pro to fix it. It could be that the pipe is degraded cracked, broken, or if there's a "drain out plug" in the pipe behind the stove it may be defective?

Not knowing the substance of the "pipe",,, PVC/Galvanized/ etc. I suggest replacement or certainly cutting and splicing with couplings, at the very least.

The bathroom is probably an add on, and that was how they concealed the main drain from the upstairs, (somewhat poorly I might add) It is also probably PVC not cast iron. PVC drains can be very noisy, rigid foam insulation might quiet the drain, but without seeing it it would be hard to say if that is a viable option.

Please explain your problem more clearly is water coming out of the drain or is it just very noisy?? I took your question to mean is sounds like a fire hydrant not shooting water like a fire hydrant. If it is leaking obviously you need a plumber.

Not sure why you would have a pipe sticking out of the wall behind a stove. Check and see if it has threads on it (if it is a metal pipe). You could then install a cap. If it is plastic pipe, you can glue a cap on it. I am guessing that the pipe was a sink drain at one time.

If it's 'gushing', you may have a clogged line.

Either way, you definitely have an opening that needs to be capped off.
