I work at a local pets store in which we sellmale and female bettas. I do know how to properly sex bettas other than just the length and shape of fins. But my manager is obsessed with the thought that one of the bettas is a female by slight signs of a horizontal stripe. Has anyone ever seen a long finned female betta?

Yes and no... nothing like the fins on a male, but some do have better fins than others. Stripes do come through on males from time to time especially from stress, so don;t let that fool you. Ask to set the fish aside for a few days and get it in really good condition feeding well and warming it. That will give you the best answer for sure. A mature female will begin to plump up in less than a week on a good diet.

I have seen females with longer fins, but nowhere near as large as a male's.

Sounds to me like your manager need a vacation, you know that two or three week kind at the hospital. LOL.

The horizontal stripe is most likely just a natural part of the fishes coloration.

Good luck, and here's hoping you get a promotion soon.

Well no, not really long, but I did buy a female mistakenly once. It was sold to me as a male, and he, I mean she, was gorgeous, a really deep blue color. She was small, but I just thought (and I'm sure the store thought) she was just young.
Once I got her home though, and could take a better look at her, I could see the white egg spot on her belly. I was a little ticked, cuz I paid a bit for her, but she was so pretty.
Anyway, the stripe could be fear stripes? Maybe it is a male, but he is stressed out right now?

Have one right now that has fins as long as a males. The stripes mean nothing really...A male can get them too when he is stressed. The stripes you have to look for are vertical stripes on a female around her belly region. Shaz

often in Petsmart and Petco the in many circumstances bought bettas are the Betta Speldens/Veiltail. greater adult males are bought than women folk with some ratio of 30:20. Now on the marketplace, petstores are merchandising crowntails. And out of roughly 10 shipments(shipment is each and every friday), I even have considered in elementary terms one Crowntail woman. And on the delivery checklist, it suggested 20 adult males VT/10 Male CT/ 20 woman VT. So of direction i offered her :). infrequently bought in petstores, and in case you come across one it may be a uncommon case: Halfmoons Deltas great Deltas Double Tails ("'(o.o)/"')
