why would a guy want to be with that he doesn't love in a long term relationship.

If there is no sex in the issue,
1. he could be afraid of long term relationship
2. he don't want to hurt her by leaving her
3. the girl (or type of girl) he would love don't want him, so he stays with the "non-preferred" one because he don't want to be alone.
