I'm currently on my first job and I was assigned to JAVA programming.. Now I'm assigned as an ariba developer. I just wanted to know if I'm lucky. Is being a java programmer, particular in ariba, grants me great oppurtunities? Or it would be better if I was assigned in COBOL?

COBOL is going to be useful for a long time yet, but it's an old language and turning into more of a maintenance issue than a development one.

If you're looking to expand, look into a .net language (both C# and VB are in-demand)

Just be glad you have a job!

Seriously, Java is probably the best bet for you. COBOL might be handy for getting jobs as there are not many COBOL programmers out there, but it is not a growing market and the language structure is old.

Just don't stick to Java and think it is enough. Learn more stuff in your spare time. If you want to be a real programmer, learn C and/or C++. Even if you do not use it much, learning either will teach you so much that higher level languages like Java shield you from.

Cheers

Java. Look into dot net, too, and some flavor of SQL. There are millions of COBOL programs out there, still running, but most companies are converting as fast as they can afford it.

It depends on what kind of programming you plan on doing.

Cobol is one of the oldest programming languages still in use - mainly due to the amount of low-level programming that you are capable of doing with it.

Java is object oriented, and mostly based on C & C++, it doesn't have the low-level abilities of Cobol, but if you don't need those, then it is probably easier to learn and use.

Java is way more popular than COBOL, it depends on what you want to do in your career.

Why not learn both?

Java. Cobol is going out of favor.

COBOL is an old language that very few companies use anymore. Stick with java or learn some other languages such as .net or php. These three languages are all in high demand.

Stick with Java. If you learn that, not only will you have a huge market to work in, but because it's a modern OO language, it'll help you build skills you can take to other languages too.

COBOL is horrendous to use. I worked with it once and ran screaming. It's old, clunky and extremely verbose.
