At my daughters school there is no one supervising the children when they get off of the bus. They are not supervised until after they enter the school. My daughter is in Kindergarten and has wandered off twice, and was not found until after school started and someone happened to notice her outside. She is only 5 years old! She was found in a parking lot the first time! I know there's laws for parents who leave their child unsupervised, but what about schools?? What do I do about this legally, and what are the laws?

I think everyones getting the wrong idea. I know my daughter knows better and she has been punished, and I have gone to the principle, and he said that he doesn't have the extra people and it's the childs responsibility to get in the school. I understand that my daughter was wrong, what I don't understand is why there wasn't someone there to see what was going on, and I do take her to school myself now, but what about the others childrens saftey. This school is on a main road. See my other post for more information.

Soryy,I don't know the law.....but when they get off of the bus they should be going into the school and be supervised. I live in Ohio and the doors of the school are not opened until 8:45. So the kids stay on the buses until 8:45. Then go directly inside. You should contact the school system's Superintendent and inform him/her of this situation and demand something to be done NOW!! If he doesn't address the problem to your satisfaction go to your local police department today!

I'm not sure if there is a state law regarding this issue, but I do know that most schools have a policy regarding the supervision of children before school. In the district in which I live, children are not to be dropped off more than 15 minutes before the first bell, as there will be no supervision any earlier. In your case though it sounds like your daughter is being bussed by the district, so she's not getting there to early, and there is no reason for her not to be supervised by the staff. I think you need to take your concerns to the principal, and if he/she does nothing, go to the next public school board meeting and make your concerns known.

The laws might depend on the school district... is she at a public school or a private school? The different schools have different ways of doing things. I would first talk to the school principal -- and then if nothing gets done go higher up the ladder... you could eventually talk to the school superintendent.. see what his/her feelings are. That is awful... someone should be watching - and at least the bus drive should make sure those kids all get in the school before he or she leaves!

Hundreds of kids go into the school and your daughter wanders around?

Maybe this isn't a school issue, but a parenting issue. Take the time to talk to your daughter about what behavior is appropriate and how to go into the school building. If you continue to remain concerned then take your daughter to school.

This is not one of those times to blame on the school. It's something you need to teach your child at home which is following directions and adhering to to rules - rule: get off the bus and go directly into school, you may not go anywhere else.

Why is that parents think that the school is supposed to babysit and teach the child things that are supposed to be learned at home?

Or... what you could do is talk with the School Board and tell them your concerns. If the school has a parents organizaton discuss it with them. Become a volunteer along with other parents to share the duties of monitoring the situation. They have playground monitors. Perhaps what they need is a parent who is willing to take the initiative to create these types of monitors as well.

Don't immediately blame the school for this. Offer to be part of the soution. I would bet you the school would appreciate your efforts.
