A tan makes me feel & look better somehow. Doctors warn against them for health reasons and to reduce skins aging. Still a tan makes me feel good. What do you think about tanning?

I like to tan myself, I am careful not to get to burnt. I will spend approx. 20 minutes out at a time and no more than that.

The question is, how does tanning make you feel good? Do you physically feel good, or is it a mental thing?
Mainly people tan to change their outward appearances. Either they're bored with the way they look, or they want to impress their friends by appearing to look like they are always outdoors doing things. I would say this is 99% of the reason why people attempt to tan themselves.
Now, when you tan, you build up melanin in your skin to help protect you from the UV rays. These are the tan colored cells.
Is it good for you? Your body is trying to protect you, but it's not 100% full proof. You still are doing some damage to your skin if you're outside in the sun all day long. Some people will develop cancer, others will not. This is more of a genetic disposition. You may be one of the lucky ones that can stay tanned without the bad side effects, but these people are far and few.
If you still insist of tanning, do short exposures in the beginning and lengthen the time of exposure as the days go on. High rated sunblock is important to start off with, then reduce the rating as the tan takes place. Perhaps in a couple of weeks you'll achieve that tan you so desire.
I'll assume you have very light complected skin. In this case, once the tan is achieved, you'll have to maintain the tan with weekly exposures, or the tan will fade away, and you'll have to start all over again. Bummer huh?

If a tan makes you feel better, it's not a physical reaction, but a mental one. So use something thing else like those tan in a can products. I avoided the sun most of my life and I am now 73 and have the skin of a 45 year old and look a lot younger. I knew a mother and two daughters who were always tanning and they all got skin cancer. In fact the mother died from it and was 43 pounds at the end. Also I have a friend who got skin cancer on her face and had to have the spots removed surgically. The tan might make you "feel good" now, but think about later when it won't feel that good when you have to go under the knife or are being eaten away by cancer. Also think about how you will look down the road when you look older than you could have looked, then you might not "feel good".
I don't want to be a fatalist but it can happen.

A nice tan does look good on people but the doctors are absolutely correct - plus it can cause skin cancer.
I have fair skin and as a teenager (and young adult) wanted a tan. It took some time but I finally found a way to get a light tan (I used mineral oil). Anyway, I am now developing very early signs of what could be skin cancer. Now, I wish I would have listened to the doctor.....
I guess it's ok to have the attitude; 'I want a tan now and I'll worry about the negative effects later' - but once you begin developing skin cancer - you will wish you would have stayed out of the sun - you will pay for it!
Therefore, there are tons of pros and cons to tanning.

whoa....... a million. you will in all risk get a transformation after one pass to, only determine you do no longer pass in too long and get burnt! 2. i might say around 5-7 visits reckoning on the potential of the bulbs on the tanner you are going to. 3. Tanning beds supply you an identical tan. 4. i might constantly tan interior the sunlight if I had time! you could constantly do the two. 5. Tans from a mattress final a on a similar time as as quickly as you have been oftentimes going i might say some week earlier you're going back to favourite. 6. no longer something extremely happens when you tan in the two place different than that it is going to certainly will positioned on off or in case you get burnt it is going to peel off. Thats why you're able to desire to pass quite oftentimes and for suited quantities of time.

I feel tanning is wonderful. It makes you look healthy and helps you to feel great. If you like to stay tan all year round I recommend using the spray tan during the winter time as it allows your skin to take a break from the sun or a tanning bed.

Happy Tanning!

Tanning or fake baking? Tanning is okay in moderation. Use a high sun blocker. Now tanning beds stay away. The idea is a tan not to look orange. I have seen a few people look okay but not many. And those fake bakers after a few years look older than they are it messes up your skin. Just be happy with who you are. A tans not changing you at all in reality. Peace out.....

I've never questioned this before, I just tanned.
A month ago I was diagnosed w/ skin cancer (I'm 30). Now, in the back of my mind I still want to so bad (b/c I look so much better with a tan), but for me, it's just not worth it.

I actually dont go to tanning beds, because my family has skin cancer that runs int he family, but I do ocasionally sit outside and put this oen tanning lotion on that makes you burn and it gives me a tan. I know the suns bad for you to, but tis better than a tanning bed.

I also, right now, am using this stuff I bought from walmart that works that you put on yourself like lotion and after a few days, you'll be darker. The brand is "Jergens" and its called "Natural Glow -daily moisturizer" and it creates a healthy, summer glow all year long it says. I've been using it for a couple years now, just during the summer.

i just recently started tanning. i feel great after but i know i will not do it year round and i also only go once a week. i feel like i am washed out especially since i work the graveyard shift. i don't get a lot of time to be outside. i think, like most things, tanning needs to be done in moderation. most people you see who are leather have been tanning every day for a long time and use an accelerator every time they tan. if you just want a nice base color and not to be very darkly tan, go for it. like someone else said, my great grandfather used to work outside in the garden all day and he lived to a ripe old age. people have been living in the sun and being out, especially in the islands, in the sun a long time. i think more dangerous than tanning or drinking or smoking, is being afraid to live. think of all the stress we cause ourselves fretting about what we should or should not do. just live!!!!!!

For me, I don't want to tan. It is a personal choice, and I understand that some people believe it makes them look or maybe even feel better.... each to their own...

I feel that with my family history, my health/medical history, and my health risk factors, tanning would increase the chances of getting some skin disease/cancer, and I would rather not risk it.... I have enough on my plate (health wise) right now

Good question
