Your best bet is to contact the College or University and ask for HomeStay services which cost around A$225 per week including breakfast and dinner.
During you first 2-4 weeks then ask other students to find you a room sharing, for around A$70 to A$100 per week.
If you get stuck you can always sleep in a hostel which you can find here:http://www.cheaperthanhotels.com.au/Australia/Melbourne/
