At times I have wanted to ask such a question of others . . but have let the thought go by. I was cautious you see, and not courageous to believe I'd receive a serious answer, and let me add, that ANOTHER yet, cynical retort would open in me a Pandora's box full of incendiary retorts . . but I am digressing.
When I first close my eyes, my eyes have restored whatever light has helped become an image, seemingly projected on the inside of my lids.
For example, I practice this : I look at a window's blind where a light is behind it - or strongly shining next to it and then close my eyes after looking at the emphasized blind, for 2 minutes or so, steadily. THEN - I close my eyes to find, to see, the most strange, kaleidoscopic, geometric images! Although very seldom with colour to them, they project in sienna and umber, pale yellow and muted white.
I'll then, when they disappear or stop dancing around and cease to be, I'll open my eyes, quickly get my drawing pad, pencils and oil-crayons and reproduce from immediate recall the images, these once set to paper provide wonderful backgrounds for my work. And aid greatly when I am doing fabric design or weaving. A lot of my best work, has resulted from this exercise-process, which I merely discovered by chance some time ago.
I am working on a dress I made of brown black cloth. I put a strong overhead light over it. I stare at it for a minute or so, then tightly close my eyes and then release the pressure to the lids and he result is an abundance of designs, even some colours beyond the drab described above.
I then paint, bead, embroider the dress until the dress "demands" 'STOP, I AM FINISHED!'
And presto : I've come up with an original design toward my rather more Bohemian than conventional wardrobe!
I have a feeling you may have been asking for something more spiritual, perhaps . . if so, well I am sorry to disappoint you. Although at times I have had images of spiritual designs - (calming exercise!) - I thought I'd tell you of my experiences with the practical. Since by this exercise I've described, I offer MUCH to my artwork!
I hope sincerely my experience has helped toward your question.
And PLEASE : For the Well-poisoners, hard core cynics out there doing their predatory thing : NO! There has been no use of alcohol, drugs in this exercise at seeing!
And please do not go THERE : There meaning am I delusional or Schizophrenic because if you do, you'll be attacking through your debased form of humor, very serious and unfortunate illnesses that may afflict some. folks!
So, Bee- Hive. please! At least for once?!

Let me guess... your lecturer/tutor is attempting to indicate that we live in an objective world which refutes the subjective.
'The back of my eyelids'; hmmm... 'red'; 'swimmy things'; 'sparkly gold flashes'; et alia.
I have a friend, a paranoid schizophrenic, who closes her eyes and sees her world pass in procession. Having turned sixty-five and, had eye surgery which has given her good vision, she has suddenly perceived herself as old. Mirrors be damned!
My point being that, when she closes her eyes, she still lives in a pictorial world which offers her the glamour that she seeks. And, for her, it is a REAL world.
When I close MY eyes, I see my own death. And the 'back-of-everything'. Mostly, it's tiredness. Sometimes it's the 'dreams-I-don't-want-to-have'. They're the worst. These days they're called 'flash-backs'. Mostly, they're accepted as PTSD, or at least a result of it.
On a good night, I write poetry, on a bad one, scream a lot. And try NOT to close my eyes.

In dark you see nothing but darkness. But if you see towards bright light, whether it is artificial or natural Sun light you can see all blood vessels and nerves of eye lids.
