As a Hartlepool fan, playing Premiership reserve teams in the lower leagues would make a mockery of football and ruin all the teams in the lower leagues. Some team’s reserve players will not try as hard as they will not want to get injured and play it safe, which in turn would make matches less competitive. As matches in the lower leagues become less competitive less people will watch, which will have a disastrous effect.
Similarly, using lower league clubs as feeder clubs to play their reserves would also not work. Lower league football teams’ have fans that are more passionate than Premiership fans and turning a team into somebody else’s reserves would lose that team their identity. It’s easy for someone to support a Premiership team and only watch matches on the television and forget that there are real fans that support lower league teams through thick and thin with a large percentage going to every game. Lower league football is just as important as Premiership football so it shouldn’t be abused and trodden on.
I actually watch quite a few Hartlepool reserve team matches and I feel that reserve players should play in the reserve league as that’s what it’s there for. The reserves leagues aren’t broken so don’t fix it. The Premiership teams have already had their way and formed a Premiership only reserve league even though a lot of those reserve teams finished lower than the Coca-Cola ones (e.g. In 2003/04 Hartlepool reserves finished 10 points clear of Newcastle reserves but the following year Newcastle reserves were playing in a higher Premiership only reserve league). The reserve team should be used to allow younger players to gain experience and impress the manager enough to give them a chance in the first team, which is what it’s there for. If a manager feels that a player won’t gain experience by playing reserve team football then he can do two things; 1) promote him to the first team or 2) send him out on loan.
And yes there is a gulf between the Premiership and Coca-Cola leagues and that’s simply because Premiership teams are greedier and the FA are failing to financially support lower league teams. The idea to put Premiership’s reserve teams in the Coca-Cola league teams would only increase the gulf and make Premiership teams stronger and Coca-Cola league teams weaker. And as for removing relegation that would further more increase the gulf and in effect introduce and one tier football and teams in the Championship would have nothing to play for. The only reason why some teams struggle to survive after relegation to the Championship is because they were greedy and bought too many players and offered too high wages than they could afford without being in the Premiership.
When the Premiership was first introduced, it was full of professional footballers who were good and passionate about the game. However, the influx of money has decreased the passion as more and more Premiership players only care about the money. The greed of Premiership clubs will kill the game and they should not have a stranglehold on football in England. There’s 92 clubs in the football league, not 20.

As a Liverpool fan I have to say that Rafa the Gaffa is wrong.
This will make it even harder for British players to make it in to the premiership. Already we have a top league that is awash with mediocre foreign talent, British players are not given the chance too prove themselves, off the shelf imports are preferred.
If this happens the 2nd league in Britain will be dominated by reserve teams made up of foreign imports which will further dilute British talent.
This will have devastating effects for the English national side.
The EEC is considering limiting all teams to six non national players such is the concern over the influence of foreign players.

I think having reserve teams would be hard to achieve, i do believe their could be greater tie ups with clubs for example Liverpool and Crewe's could become closer. So many small clubs struggle to survive and I believe could become feeder clubs with bigger sides supplying coaching and players each year.

No, I say if you want your reserves to get some top experience, send them out on loan for awhile.
