Tone poem. Descriptive of the atmosphere of the palace gardens at Aranjuez, a small palace south of Madrid. One of the few places in central Spain where there are tall trees, because Alphonso would not allow them to be cut down.
The concerto is neo-classical and nationalistic. Note the use of dance rhythms from both historical and Spanish traditional sources. Also, as well as the guitar techniques of classical guitar music there is frequent use of flamenco techniques. If describing the tone poem it is useful to remember that Rodrigo had been blind since childhood and that he had never actually seen Aranjuez! The Concierto is possibly the most popular piece of classical music in Spain and is considered to be an icon of Spain.
