I just got some new fish and I think that it is time to upgrade the old ones to a new tank, but I don't want to pay more then about $50 for one. I am not really worried about the size right now, but I would like to have a choice in the ones I can select from.

Can someone help with some suggestions on where I can get a used fish tank from?

The Columbus Area Fish Enthusiasts auction is coming up at the end of this month. There will be used tanks you can buy for quite reasonable prices. Usually they have tanks of all sizes at these auctions. Lots of fish and hardware too. Here is a link to their website with info on where it is held and the time:

http://www.columbusfishclub.org/

The public is welcome, you don't have to be a member to come to the auctions, and there is no admission charged to get in.

I live in Cleveland and within an hour of me there are no less than six auctions about every three months. I take a lot of my fry (baby fish) to sell and make enough to buy fishfood for all of my tanks.

There are typically 300-400 bags of fish, plants and hardgood items. You can call or email the people in the club to ask about the auction, they will be glad to give you all the answers.

You might even want to join up. A lot of the clubs have monthly speakers, small raffles and a club library that has many books on fish you can borrow. I belong to two clubs here in Cleveland, the Cleveland Aquarium Society and the Great Lakes Cichlid Society.

One meets at the Cleveland Zoo and we were just treated to a behind the scenes tour of the Rainforest facility at one of our meetings. The dues are only $12 a year for this one and $15 for the GLCS. They both include a monthly magazine. Well worth the $.

I have been looking for tanks online at ebay in an area search. I actually just bought a 10 gallon tank in Dublin off of ebay but I have seen them in all sizes being sold on ebay within a 50 mile radius or bigger if you are willing to travel farther distances. I have seen several go for an amazingly good deal.

Good luck!

Garage sales. I got a complete 29 gallon kit with stand at a garage sale for $10. I've picked up many 10 and some 20 gallons on the curb during spring clean up for nothing.

Craigslist can be good, but don't spend more than $1 per gallon on the tank part itself. If they are asking for more then you might as well buy a new one.
