you cant change EVERYONE, but if we each reach ONE person with the truth, eventually it will be a tiny blemish, rather than an overriding theme

Sometimes, you have to fight the good fight.
I attended a predominately white school from kindergarten on. I was picked on often b/c I was the "black girl". Granted, I got tired of standing up for myself. Some days, it was just too much to bear. That's when I realized that I had a few really great friends who would stand up for me.
THAT'S an excellent reason to fight! Helping someone out can mean all the difference in the world to them. It did to me.
Making one person think about their actions or words can make them change for the better for the rest of their lives. Imagine how many people in the future would not be subjected to their ignorance because of you.
Keep fighting.

in some ways i do agree with you. yes, i think that racism will always be an issue for all. but there will be some who will change their minds (even after being raised to hate), some who will raise their children not to hate and others who will. there will also be people who have had bad experiences and someone will change their mind by example.
i do also agree with the first answer that was given. as long as we keep celebrating everyones race as something different then human it will further the gap. i'm white and there isn't a white celebration month. some people would say every day is white people day, but i don't agree with that.
i was waiting in a long line to buy curtains and there was a woman behind me who decided to go get someone else to help (of the same "color") and after she was done, she walked away from the long line instead of helping the rest of us. (just proving my point it is on all sides).
i don't teach my children to hate...it's wrong in general. if i don't like someone, it's beacuse of their character, not their color.
bottom line is, if one person can be changed, it is still a step in the right direction.

I cant give you a reason but I can tell you my feelings. I am NOT a racist (I am white and 53 y.o.) and grew up in NYC and you can be sure that nyc is much more loving and accepting the the rest of the country and I treat people like people regardless of their ethnicity... however I am clear that adult whites are fearful, materialistic and selfish.
I support your efforts if you do find a noble fight to change this. What you can do is try not to get to angry, it doesnt help. Be a good person and win over the white people you DO interact with. THere are many out there who are racist-'light' or very light and judge people on their character once they meet them. Its a small wedge but it is not hopeless.
i strongly suggest you listen to the show here (live or archive)... there is all kinds of positiv stuff here!

I'm not sure that it is forever. I fight racism and try to raise my children as color-blind because I truly believe that we can stop racism. And even if it is forever, do you stop trying to fight an evil just to let it grow and consume the good? No, of course not. Even if you can't put out a fire, it's better to keep the fire contained than to let it spread and destroy the whole forest.

Personally I feel the best way to combat racism is be the best person you can be.
Most racists go on the basis of the bad stereotypes and if you break away from those stereotypes their hatred has no merit other than their own ignorance.

it's not forever, it's actually a very minor problem today. however, if you choose to live under the delusion that it is forever, you should consider actually doing something about it, as opposed to whining about it.
unlike the popular belief amongst blacks that white supremacists don't like them for absolutely no reason, a primary reason why white supremacists don't like african americans is because they believe they are not intelligent. african americans have contributed the least to modern science, philoshophy, etc. perhaps you should consider disproving that myth by reversing it, encourage yourself and others to avert your aspirations outside the scope of the 'ghetto and gangs', and actually contribute to society. find a cure for cancer, unify relativity and quantum mechanic principles, develop an intriguing set of beliefs, write a brilliant book, etc.

you can't fight racism. you just have to accept the fact that people are and forever will be stuck with that ignorance as long as they teach their children on and on.... unless you kill every racist person and organization in the world.....and i don't see that happening.

because in the fighting of racism you make a difference, even if it is only of value to one person it is a difference, There are always going to be people who judge others unjustly.....just remember if only one person is helped then you've made a difference.....

Thats what people like you said, that is why it took the civil rights Bill another 100 years to come in place.
In a nutshell, you fight for your children; for your children's future.
