when it comes to oil it's all about the viscosity and the higher the viscosity the better the oil. The difference is that the synthetic has a longer live because of it's viscosity sometimes the additives in the synthetics can put a protective coating for cold starts in places that have below freezing temp. and it also helps that the synthetic has a higher temperature rating before it starts to breakdown. If you do regular oil changes and proper maintenance the cost of synthetic can be cost prohibitive or the age of the vehicle it may not help. Regular oil changes is your best bet. The only other thing to consider is the manufactures recommendations and the warranty clauses if it calls for synthetic and you don't use it , it could void warranty. I hope that helps

synthetic oil is man made. Conventional oil is pumped from the ground and requires refinement to remove impurities, trash, grit and such. Conventional oil is recommended to be changed every 3000 miles or 3 months so that you do not lose the viscosity of the oil. When oil viscosity breaks down the lubricating properties is no longer there and damage can be done to the engine. With synthetic oil i have seen recommended changes of 5000 miles and higher because the sludge factor(varnish buildup) is not in this type of oil. i have used synth oil but the cost is higher and i still change around 3000 miles. both of my cars exceed 110k miles now

Synthetic is better than conventional motor oil in many ways. From being easy to start your car in winter to providing better lubercation and causes less friction. Never use a syntec in a car that has always had conventional oil in it. Because it can cause some bad leaks. The syntec cleans up the sludge and carbon from seal and gaskets. Never break a new engine in with syntec. You need to use a conventional oil for that, syntec does not have Phof. Zinc in it. The zinc will consion the moving parts. Not all conventional oil have zinc in it. Because the gov. says it cause to much pollution when it gets burned. Shells rotella oils have it. If the engine is broke in it is OK to put the syntec in, and run it for the rest of your cars life.

I think so, I use it myself. The synthetic oils are made form mineral oil, which has no wax remaining in it. The wax in conventional oil is what causes the sludge, or grease to collect in the engine. As conventional oil heats and cools, the wax separates from the oil, bonds with the dirt, and forms sludge.

Yes. It still needs to be changed at regular intervals, but it is very slippery stuff and stands up to heat better without "carbonizing". Mobil 1 is so slippery, I once tried it in a motorcycle engine. Motorcycles use a wet clutch. The clutch would slip, so I had to drain it out and use conventional oil. There's a reason racer's use synthetics. Less friction = more speed and less wear.

some of it is but i will still not leave any oil in my car over 3,000 miles due to the fact that no matter how good the oil is it is still being contaminated by gasoline leaking past the piston rings over time. that happens no matter how new the car is.
