Can a good President survive? Does this explain why no real people run for that high office?

His character would be assassinated before he could be elected. Corruption is necessary to get the funding candidates need. All politicians have sold their souls to get into politics, so if they see someone who isn't corrupt, they attack.

You're halfway there. The problem is that even if someone deserving of election were to run, they'd be shooed out of the running by a more extreme face of the party.

It's a possibility it could happen. The average joe with common sense would maintain his integrity and continue to do what is correct for the people. Those opposed will either try to corrupt him in his morals to swing him to their side or attack him in any manner to remove that threat he poses to their side.
