Take a 3 day weekend in October/November (not during a holiday though) and come down with intention of finding a place to rent for 6months - call a few places in advance from the internet so you have some direction. Things are hectic but it's so much easier to move down here knowing where you will live. (I have moved back and forth from CT to FL twice)

I would say move down....put all your stuff in storage for a little bit, and find a cheap hotel. You won't have to worry about moving twice then. Everyday go out and scout homes and apartments and stuff. I know everything down there is really expensive though. I have a lot of family down in the Jacksonville area. It would be like an adventure for you and your son. You can make the best out of it. There are homes, apartments, townhouses, and condos going up like CRAZY in Florida EVERYWHERE. So it shouldn't take too long to find something. On your first night there stop by some gas stations and pick up those booklets with a listing of houses and stuff for sale. It would give you an idea of where to start looking and prices of stuff. You can ask the gas station person or the hotel desk person how to get to those areas also. Good luck and I hope you find something soon!

If you are selling your house in Maryland then if you go to the right real estate office they can help you find something in Florida. They for sure can find you a rental house (not vacation house -you pay more for vacation houses) and you could go on a virtual tour of the place before you move there.
If you are not selling go online and check out apartment complexes and such for short term rentals or contact real estate agencies down there by email they will send you lots information and help you try to find a place. Many places do have the virtual tours of many of their houses.
I actually do recommend renting for the first few months because then you have time to look around for the neighborhood you want with the right schools for your son etc.

Try a timeshare. I don't mean to buy one but there is a slump in rentals. If you book early, you may have some good savings.

Try the local Hilton. They're usually pretty nice.
