I was burgled just over two years ago and they took my nice OLD black telly. It was an ex rental with Granada, we'd had it for years on rental and then I bought it for fifty quid and it carried on for another five or six years before being nicked and I had to replace it with one of these trendy wide screen things.
About a year ago, the picture expanded. I can't see the clock on Breakfast telly, subtitles and credits are no go areas. If there's a lighthearted side to it, you know when there's an interview going on. I can't see either of the people but I get a brilliant view of the room in the middle of them.
A couple of weeks ago, it expanded again and I can see even less of the picture. I can't see the programme information bar (on Sky) at all.
I've pressed all the buttons I can think of on the remote and sometimes it goes down to the presvious level of expansion, today, it hasn't. But I never get it to go back to normal. Any advice or do I need a new television?

These are all very helpful answers, I've tried pressing the picture button but it's not helping at all. It's a Ferguson TV by the way.

ok...there are two things you need to get right....first make sure sky is set to the right picture format (press services....system settings...picture settings and make sure picture format is set 16:9 for a widescreen).
next the should be a screen size button on your remote for the tv....check instructions. problems occur when this is set to "auto"...you need to change it to "full" to get the best picture.

ok if you have a setting button on the remote press that that then mite bring you onto picture quality and size with most tvs you need to press a button that resizes the screen it should come up saying the different modes like 16:9 or auto keep pressing the button on it and you should find the rite size but don't buy a new tv its just a waste of money hope this helped

There should be a some way of altering the aspect format. I found a similar problem with mine in that it trimmed a little of the top and bottom so I could not read the subtitles on my samurai films.
There should (somewhere) be a button labeled "aspect" or that has a symbol of a square with 4 arrows in it (up, down, left and right facing).
If you really can't find it go to ask.com and put in about the make and model of your TV and how to alter the aspect.

Sounds like you have the zoom facility set wrong - check in the menu for screen/picture - most if not all have a setting for AUTO. Try that one first. If not set to 16.9
Another thing to remember is that not all TV stations broadcast fully in widescreen yet - that may account for black lines at the sides.
Without knowing which TV you have it is not easy to explain fully but it sounds like it is trying to zoom in all the time - this normally happens on other settings like CINEMA/THEATRE - the only thing to do is find the menu for picture and find the most suitable picture - BUT don't forget to SAVE or STORE the settings otherwise it will just keep going around the houses so to speak

I can do the same thing on my TV as what you describe when my tv is changed from 16:9 to cinema.
See if the ratio setting is on Automatic set or 16:9

we got one of these new telly's an i don't like mine either the wide screen makes everyone look really fat. my son and hubby like it and have no problem with it but i don't .we do have a button on the remote that changes the screen size,so if I'm on my own i change it to the one i like, and i suppose really its on that screen most of the time only if my sons watching it he changes it back, not much of a problem really you would think but it is annoying.but to your problem what make is your TV ask in questions anyone with the same t.v and how to change it ,my settings are.movie expand 14.9 16.9...subtile zoom, super size zoom, wide screen, 4.3 movie expand 14.9 the last is my favourite one, good luck with this

You need to go into the settings > picture options to choose your picture mode (16:9, 4:3 compromise etc.), and change the vertical/horizontal stretching and positioning of the picture.

*bows head in shame* Camel filter out 99s actually, i'm quitting as quickly on the shrink, therapists and scientific professional come to a call my life is now no longer in too lots turmoil for me to circumvent quitting. you be attentive to you have themes while a psychiatrist, 2 therapists and a GP say "do no longer quit smoking now!" this is merely approximately like they have been given at the same time and stated it--even rehearsed it. i think they knew i may be centred on quitting because of the fact i might relate my mom's cutting-edge death to her 60 years of smoking.

What make and model is your tv? It sounds like someones hit the zoom or picture preference button or sometihng. If you supply the above details, I'll google it and find the button for you to fix it.
Stay tuned...
