Once upon a time, the tribe in this valley could hate the tribe in the next valley ... then it became nation, then racial groupings and then alliances of blocks during the cold war.
When wars took place, the winners would take over the vanquished (that is how Texas left Mexico and became USA).
But we are realizing we need to get along with others. Past enemy nations are now allies. Beaten countries are helped to become industrialised (eg a lot of money went to Japan, Germany after WW II).
Many families have in-laws from foreign countries more than ever before in history. School classrooms are becoming as international as early UN meetings.
Many people know more things about other countries, cultures and religions than their parents knew. Even our stomachs have international experience with different cultural restaurants around.
But to become friends, you have to talk, share, get off your butt and say hi ...
I go to several interfaith groups regularly, and that helps to meet friends I would otherwise not have the chance to meet.
Friends are not legislated by governments. They are not organised by Big Brother.
The little guy has to be willing to *compromise same attitudes and customs to meet others and find a brother or sister of another culture or race he never knew was there.

Thank you for your question ... good luck in your future experiences.

Thanks to the web, the common folk are finding common ground. Four generations hence, war will be unthinkable. For now, tho, One hell of tussel is it the works. Not between various religious faiths as some would have you think, but between secularism and religion. Secularism will, in the long run, win. People will slowly recognize religion for the ensalving monster that it is and how it is the impediment to peace. Because, as we become a world community, we will adopt the philosophy of live and let live, that we might not be molested.
Now as to the four generations - that is how long it takes for the current generation, the cold war generation, effects to fade from society and the generation of the WWW to rise to power.
Reason I think this will be the case - You don't slay the ones you know out of hand unless you're insane.
