I would think you might go insane before you started to keep the student awake lol.

I can imagine that you would just have tired cranky students. You could always just find out what each student finds to be irritating and when that student falls asleep proceed with what that individual student finds to be irritating. No need to torture the students who are awake with the repulsive sound of finger nail scratching chalk. Or take a picture of the student sleeping and put it up on a bulletin board. You could even use the sleeping pictures as a nutrition bulletin board. You could put as the bulletin board heading.... What your body needs to keep it energized. The put foods that help with keeping a body energized and place the photos of the sleeping students on it. Hopefully though the students are not seeking a photo oppourtunity or they just might end up falling asleep just to have their pics taken, lol. I have no idea if this has helped, but I don't think finger nail chalk will be a big hit. I don't think I could handle using it if I was a teacher.

Well, where I teach, students have their school bags so full that either tiffin boxes or their schools bags keep falling on the floor. Then there are loud wailing sounds! And as if this is not enough, their water bottles are often left half open. Never do I find a classroom completely dry. Noisy chalk is not a good idea. Something still louder?

You don't need to invent it. If you hold the chalk at the correct angle and apply the proper pressure, you make make an even better noise than fingernails. The kids hate it!

I have the best answer for your question "If I invented chalk that made the same noise as fingernails on the blackboard, would it keep the pupils awake?". Please click the link below to check my answer:

Yeh, it'd probably keep them awake, but they'd be listening to music to drown out the noise instead of paying attention, but who uses chalk these days?

Who uses chalk anymore in classrooms? Dry erase boards are the standard in most schools where I've taught.

It might work. The flaw in it would be that there are no longer chalkboards in most classrooms. White boards and projection systems have replaced them. ( No more begging to get out of class to beat the erasers against the building. )Ah, for the good old days!

After an hour they'd probably all have a nervous breakdown due to sensory overload and run from the class holding their ears, crying and screaming .
