I just finished a book called "Under The Baseball Moon" by John Ritter last night. It is about a boy who plays trumpet and is looking to break into the music world and a girl who plays softball who wants to make it as a professional pitcher. I know these two things don't really sound like they go together, but the book flows very well. I was thinking it would be a great pre-teen story.
Even though I'm not really into trumpeting or softball I enjoyed the book. It was really very different from a lot of young adult books I've read.
I'm including the amazon.com link if you're interested in looking further into it.

I'll recommend Enid Blyton. She wrote books for different ages.I was about 11 when I read Secret Island and loved it.It is about 2 kids whose pilot parents leave them in the care of their uncle and aunt. They however mistreat the kids and they run away to a secret island with the help of Jack,an orphan. The later books show the kids teaming up with Prince Paul and having lots of new adventures.
Her R-mystery book series beginning with The Rockingdown Mystery are really great. It is about 3 cousins and a dog who gang up with a circus boy Barney and his monkey.Barney is searching for his father.Meanwhile they solve lots of mysteries and have fun.
Check out the link I gave below to read about the rest of Blyton's books.Mail me if you want more info.

Famous Five and Secret Seven are good for that age. Harry Potter, hmmm... first let that person read the first part of the book if that person likes it buy other 5 parts. There is Nancy Drew Notebooks that is also suitable for that age.9(Mostly girls like Nancy Drew Notebooks)

The Harry Potters
Xanth Novels- Piers Anthony
They are tongue in cheek, easy, campy reading for that age. There are dozens of them too so if they like them you won't have to ask for quite a while.

Definately Jean Ure's books.
Try "Vicky Angel", "Shrinking Violet" or any other of her very interesting titles.
Her stories are very inspiring and tell stories of normal 11 to 12 year olds in different situations.
Have fun!!!
