I would think it is the accents... I think the US takes away the U for some reasons.....
Check - Cheque
Flavor - Flavour
Honor - Honour
Also why does the US waste an "L" in words like
enrollment - Enrolment
Skillful - Skilful
Fulfill - Fulfil
