I think death both helped and hindered Janie's freedom in the novel. The death of her grandmother forced her to stay with her first husband, however his death allowed her to escape into another reality. You see Janie become much stronger and more independent with each death she experiences in her life. By the time she is forced to kill Teacake she is able to complete the act and move past yet another disappointment in her life.

Check out sparknotes or bookrags for actual symbolism analysis if you want better specifics. Hope this helps!

Her grandma died and she was basically forced to stay with her husband, (the old man). Her 2nd husband died on her and i remember her killing her lover TEACAKE! So basically her entire she was forced with seeing death 1 way or the other. I;m basically taliking about the book.
