The Lumiere brothers (August and Louis).

There were several other early filmmakers as well, but they are credited with holding the first public film exhibition where admission was charged. (December of 1895).

Edison made motion pictures, but was dependent upon several experiments and trials that were done before any of his inventions.

Of course, film did start with an understanding that successive still pictures could "fool" the eye into seeing motion. This idea dates (probably) to the 1820's, even though the science behind it may not have been recognized. The idea of projecting still pictures dates to even earlier than that.

Modern filmmaking is the result of many different experiments and many different technologies that have developed over a period of time.
