Lets say that you fiancés failure to pay on past financial obligations resulted in their recent income return having a lien placed against it. This means that they did not receive their refund, it was applied toward the debt owed.

Now, if we were to marry this year as planned, could next years joint return have a lien placed against it also? Could I be made responsible for past financial obligations?

His debts are his until you actually sign and agree to take them on. They will affect your household credit. Joint returns will have claims placed on his portion of the return.

No, definitely not. You aren't financially responsible for your mate until such time as you sign agreements making you mutually liable or there are common children involved. Once married, the spouse's debts may become yours if in fact they were initiated after the date of the wedding, or in the case of the ceremony and bridal arrangements, you might become equally responsible for a limo or catering, etc.

Sorry to say pretty much. If your referring to your tax return being taken for outstanding bills it will still happen after your married until the debt is paid in full. unless your state has the "injured spouse filing" which then you get half of the return. i would have the debt paid up before getting married then your not responsible for it

yes most definitely
my husband just got well he thought he got it all straight and they took the taxes anyway. If you have a job every year you will be able to file married but separate and get your part. If you file together and did not make any money then you will not be able to get your part. If you make a certain amount you will be able to send a letter and get your part out of it.
good luck If you want to talk farther about this email me
I am going through the first year of marriage.

Yes and Yes....
My suggestion is to have your fiance sort out the debts prior to getting married. Once you say "I Do", you are saying "I Do" to all your fiance's debts as well. If this issue has not been resolved prior to getting married, you will I guarantee you will have financial problem which will lead you two to argue all the time. Act wisely.
