Years ago I had this problem and here is what I did to get rid of ingrown toe nails. Since then I have not one time had a problem with my toes or an ingrown toe nail.
At the center of my nail I would cut it straight across. But would not cut the sides. I let the nail grow and as it would grow out I continued to cut the middle of the nail straight across.
This causes the sides of the nail to grow out. As they started to grow up out of the side of nail bed where the skin is attached then I would cut all the way across STRAIGHT.
What this does is get the nail up out of the side of your toe.
Once it is grown out and straight across, you can then take your nail file and round the side SLIGHTLY so they don't catch on your socks or shoes.
It will take a little time but well worth it. I promise because I use to be in so much pain from ingrown toe nails. What caused ingrown toe nails was them being rounded off or cut down in the quick which causes them to grow into your skin on the side of your toe nail bed.
After you get them grown out and in good condition, go get a pedicure and get a french manicure done to your toe nails.
It is very pretty. :-)

I have never done this proceedure on a child. I would seek medical help for it. Go to a doctor, let them at the least demonstrate to you how to do it best on your child.
Typically when I have to cut an ingrown toenail, I first numb the area with some Lidocaine. You probably don't have Lidocaine, so your best bet would be to ice the are well, until it's fairly numb.
If the toenail is ingrown to the side you want to cut parallel to the growth. Ie. Cut the toenail from the front to back, a little past the point where the toenail is grown in. Then, remove the ingrown portion from the skin with tweezers. Apply a bandage and some antiseptic cream to the area to help keep it from getting infected.
If the toenail is growing down into the front portion of the toe, cut paralell to it as well, trying to preserve as much of the toenail that is not ingrown as possible. Again, remove the ingrown portion from the skin using tweezers, bandage, and apply antiseptic cream.
If possible try to remove the ingrown portion without cutting too much of the nail.
To help prevent ingrown nails:
-Soak the foot in warm water 4 times a day. You do not need to add soap or antibacterial agents to the water
-Wash the foot including the affected area twice a day with soap and water. Keep the foot clean and dry during the rest of the day.
-Do not wear high heels or tight-fitting shoes. Consider wearing sandals, if appropriate, until the condition clears up, and if it comes back frequently, continue to wear loose shoes or sandals as much as possible. Allow your feet to get as much unconstricted time as possible.
Otherwise, see a doctor. They will have better advice for your specific situation. Home remedy is great, but a doctor can often give you advice to do it the best way possible. Sure, it's one doctor visit, but it could save you a lot of trouble down the road.

You both need to see a Podiatrist especially your 2 year old daughter. Cutting the toe nail straight across can help. It is usually genetic. I have suffered from ingrown nails and even taking the whole nail off has not worked (they keep growing back) my father suffered the same thing. When I seen a podiatrist they stated that I have a thick nail bed (something that can not be changed). As you no they are really painful and you need professional advice.

Just cut the nail straight across, don't curve down. The reason it became ingrown is because you cut the nail too low and then it became ingrown as it started to grow again. You should see a podiatrist to clean out the infected toe and have him show you the proper way of clipping.

I'd love to find a way to stop this from occuring. Let me know if you find one. Been dealing with this all my life and have never found something that works. Have been considering having those toenails removed. I know someone who did this and are very glad they did but he is a man and its a little different for us women. I like to wear sandals and stuff like that where my toes show. I often have to perform minor surgery on my big toes to get the nail out of the skin. I am not kidding either. Just did it last night again and now its wrapped up for the day. It'll be fine tomorrow and of course it feels better just to get rid of the pain of the nail but I would prefer not to have to do this every month.I will be looking for your replies for sure. When the whole nail and bed haev been surgically removed they do not grow back. The guy I know had it done because of jungle rot he got in viet nam and he has been nail free for 25 years now.

Both my son and I have the same condition. My doctor said to cut the nail straight across only. Since we've started doing this, we've had no problems. The issue is that if you cut the nail round (like a fingernail), then the edge grows under the skin, because you tend to squeeze your feet into tight shoes. When you cut the nail straight across, the nail grows evenly, and not under the skin. It may not look as pretty, but it's better than looking red, swollen and sore.

you just need to keep the tip of your nails straight across.. you don`t have to waste extra money for this.. i know many customers have ingrown toe nails and they told me how they went to doctors and such. they told me that it is also very expensive.. just go to a NICE LOOKING AND CLEAN nail salon and get a pedicure.. also tell them that you have an ingrown toe nail and show them where they are located.. be careful about your decision.. not many nail tech know how to do this quickly... it is very easy to remove when you have the right tools.. i would explain how to take it out.. but it seems too much information and there is no pictures that i can show you how.. just watch them do it a couple of times.. and eventually.. you would know how to do it yourself..

In order to avoid in grown toe nails, you have to make sure that your shoes do not squeeze your feet. also do not cut the nails back to far, and make sure that they are cut in a nice rounded pattern that encompasses the whole nail. do not leave the sides longer, that is where the problems develop.

I had these too and tried everything myself. The only way to get rid of the problem is to see your doctor. He/she will numb the area and take care of it, right there in their office. I had this done 5 years ago and have not had problems since.
