I started working for an architecture firm in December. My boss promised me everything from full benefits, a Blackberry, and half payment of my car each month. Last week, he called me into his office and told me that they were closing my division down, he fired me on the spot, but I pleaded with him to stay. He moved me to another division, which I have no background in. I am trying as hard as I can, but my new manager is like an evil drill instructor. I tok this job for it’s stability, but now I want to get back into my original field, media and broadcasting. How do I make the break from this job???

When you go home tonight update your resume, call everyone you know in your old field, tell them you are looking for work. If you possibly can hang on until you have networked yourself into a new job Or,work until your credit cards are down to zero ballences and have a nest egg ready to pound the pavement with to look for work. Then waltz into your boses office and give two weeks notice. Just be prepared to flip burgers to make rent if you don't find something right away.

Firstly, don't leave prematurely. Could it be that you are capable of doing the job, but need more time to get used to the adjustment? Think it through first. However, if you are sure the job just isn't for you, then get started searching for another job (better still start thinking about hoow you might be able to start working toward having a business of your own. When you are sure you are going to move on give appropriate notice and move on. Be honest with your boss too, you might let him/her that your passion is media and broadcasting so you are moving in that direction. If you are a hard worker, do good work and give proper notice...the door may still be open for you should you ever need to go back.

Start on a new resume and put it on Monster.com immediately. You can even list the division you were currently moved to but put a positive spin on it. Highlight your good points like media and broadcasting. The longer you stay in a job that is not part of your career path, the harder it will be to get back on it. Good luck.

I'm so sorry to hear that you're going through what we have experienced before. It is NOT fun to go through! What you need to do, is get your resume' current, and get plenty of copies of it, on nice paper. Then, you need to get your local paper online, or hard copy and look for jobs. Other resources which we have found helpful is hotjobs.....ohhhh, and one other helpful source is your local temporary agency. They have "ins" to companies that are difficult to get your foot in the door with, AND, you get to work for said people/company and see if you like it/them before you hire on full time. If they like you, they will definitely hire you.....my really good jobs that i loved i got through the temp agencies.
