Has anyone ever been prescribed Metformin after being diagnosed with PCOs and experienced weight loss? Or has it helped any other of the symptoms of PCOs, all comments greatly appreciated! I've heard that some drs prescribe it to women with PCOs and it can aid weight loss and also it regulates some womens periods. Any info or past experience would be very much appreciated!!

I am overweight and have struggled for yrs to lose the weight. My dr said it can be more difficult to lose weight if you have pcos. I'm also worrying about conceiving as my periods have become so irregular which my dr says is due to weight gain. I'm desperate to lose weight so i can get pregnant, me and my partner are desperate for a baby.

hi there i have pcos but havent used metformin it's normally prescribed for insulin ressistant as its a diabetic drug.
It can aid weight loss but not if you are overeating my cousin was on it but didn't loose weight (too much chocolate)
I have been told that the diabetic diet is the best to follow with pcos.
Weight loss does help improve with periods and other symptons mine have come more regular since but Istill haven't concieved yet.
I'm trying the natural herbal remedy now agnus casus and wild yam. clomid didnt work for me and I can't afford ivf.
I know of three people with pcos who have managed to get pregnant two naturally and one while on metformin.
I'm gratefull for my two kids that I have from before i knew about my pcos but I still would love a child with my new partner as he hasn't any.
He loves me though and thinks of my boys as his and so does his familly.
Please feel free to email me

I've not been presribed that, though weight has not been so much my problem- I have some other nasty side affects though. But your weight gain is a symptom of your PCOS so it seems right to me that if the drug is sorting your PCOS it would also go some way to correct your weight gain. I was on Dianette for years and years after being diagnosed at 14yrs! They've changed it now as you're not supposed to be on it so long.
Go to your doctor if you are worried though

I have PCOS and I was prescribed Metformin and yes it does help a little with weight loss but that's because of the side effects. It gives you Diarhea and cramps. It's the worst I've ever had. After a while you get used to it and the weight loss goes away. It is suppose to help with periods, but I am still having troubles with mine. It is also helps reduce the abnormal hair growths. Hope this was helpful.

My friend was diagnosed with PCOS and prescribed metformin. She was also advised to lose weight, and through diet she did. Her periods became a lot more regular and after about 6 months (she had been trying for a baby for 4 years) she fell pg. The doctors told her that if she wanted another it would take a long time again to conceive, she started trying again quite soon after the birth and fell pg almost immediately.

The metformin didn't help me with weight loss. It made me feel sick and gave me shocking cramps and diarrhoea. I hated every minute of it. For quick weight loss to get you started, try Optifast. It is a meal replacement program which will give you a starting block in order to continue to lose the weight. A low GI diet is also good for pcos sufferers as it combats the other symptom of insulin resistence. The food digests slowly and absorbs the excess insulin therefore allowing the body to metabolise like it should be and aid weight loss. I never found it helped to regulate my periods. It is to do more with the insulin side od pcos, as it is a drug which is used for diabetics. Hope I helped. If you have any other questions, feel welcome to e mail me!
