Some people are asking because they can't think of anything else to say. Some are just being cordial. Some actually want an honest answer. I just say ,"fine, how are you?" If they want more than that, I am sure they will press for it.

When the one asking is just someone you know but you are not really close you say: fine thank you. But if the one asking is really close to you then you tell her all your aches and pains then say thanks for asking. But of course you can also say you're happy and feeling great when you're feeling really happy and great!

I say "Fine." If I'm in a supercrappy mood, I ignore them altogether if its a stranger. People ought to see the grim look on my face before they ask how I'm doing. Well, I feel like crap obviously!

Its been my experience that most ofthe time (unless its a close friend or family member) when someone asks you "How are you?", they really don't want to HEAR how you REALLY are. They say it so the other person FEELS like they care. I do it too! So I typically answer with the generic, stock answer, "Not too bad, yourself?"

I usually just say "fine, thanks." I figure they usually aren't interested in the truth and are just being polite. If they know me well enough to ask "what's wrong," then they get the truth.

I usually say "fine, thank you" cause most people really couldn't care less. It's become a form of greeting rather that a real inquiry about your health or well being. Sad isn't it.
