laughing at others? How do we judge the degree of funny in something?

i think the more you can relate to the topic, the more funny it is. for example, if i told you about the time i accidently went into the men's dressing room, you might giggle a little if it never happened to you. BUT, if you had a similar experience, you might say "OH MY GOSH!!! that happened to me a week ago" and start laughing really hard!!

I think a lot of times it has to do with personal experience. What might tickle your funny bone may be considered dry humor to me or vice versa. If I have something from my memory banks to draw upon, it may have a direct correlation and be "safe" or secure" to be "funny". Jim Carey, Adam Sandler, Eddie Murphy, etc... we consider them comedic geniuses because they have towed the line on many occasions but I wonder if somebody that had no idea who they were, would they be rolling on the floor in laughter?!

This is fantastic question, you certainly made me think. I cannot explain this one myself but i am dying to hear what the others have to say.
