What are you taking the 17.5% of?
I guess it must be 17.5% of X.
Say some product costs X pounds (ex. VAT), the tax is then 17.5% of X on top of X so the price you pay is 2000 pounds.
Take X = 100%
Then X + 17.5% of X = 117.5% of X
as 1% can be expressed as the ratio 1/100, then
117.5% of X = 117.5/100 * X
and your equation is
117.5/100 * X = 2000
muliply both sides of the equation by 100 to get
117.5 * X = 2000 * 100
divide both sides of the equation by 117.5 to get
X = 200000 / 117.5
X = 1702.12766
So the price before VAT is £1702.13

The general rule how to find the price ex.Vat is to divide the full price by 1.175!
(1.175 = 117.5/100)

(2000 ÷ 100) x 17.5 = 350
x = 2000 - 350 = 1650

Its not a very well put question..We have to assume that it means that X plus 17.5% of X equals 2000.
So to find out what x is...
We know that 117.5% of x equals 2000 therefore if we divide 2000 by 117.5 which gives us 17.02 we get one per cent of x.
Therefore X = 1702.
Be sure that you have read and written the question correctly though.

1.175 x = 2000
x = 2000 / 1.175
x = 1702.12766

If you are trying to find a nett of VAT price , The quickest and simplest way is to divide 2000 by 1.175. Answer 1702.13

1702.13 + 297.87 = 2000

X + 0.175X = 1.175X, therefore:
1.175X = 2000,
X = 2000/1.175 = 1702.1

x+0.175=2000 (-0.175)

there is one simple fact
if you know it you would be able to solve any percentage problem
50% = 50 /100
17% = 17 /100
and the word percent means ( per cent ) for each hundred in french
so x + 17.5/100 = 2000
x = 2000 - 0.175= 1999.825
