I just got a new battery at Sears (prorated replacement). The car was not holding enough of a charge. Now the starter barely spins when you turn the key. All of the warning lights dim and then the starter does spin and the car starts. When you first turn the key, it really sounds like you are not going to start. I have cleaned the battery terminals by removing them from the battery and cleaning them with a wire brush tool. Do I need a new starter or soleniod or should I just check the connections down there for dirt or corrosion? The vehicle is a 1996 Volvo 850 non-turbo.

You have done everything good to the charging system. Now move onto the starting system.

Your starter is binding causing excessive load on the battery thus dimming the lights. This probably toasted the old battery.

You should remove the starter and have it tested and replaced if necessary
