One of the most important properties of straight lines is their angle from horizontal. This concept is called "slope".
To find the slope, we need two points from the line.
Pick two x's and solve for each corresponding y: If, say, x = 3, then y = ( 2/3 )(3) – 4 = 2 – 4 = –2. If, say, x = 9, then y = ( 2/3 )(9) – 4 = 6 – 4 = 2. (By the way, I picked the x-values to be multiples of three because of the fraction. It's not a rule that you have to do that, but it's a helpful technique.) So the two points (3, –2) and (9, 2) are on the line y = ( 2/3 )x – 4. To find the slope, you use the following formula:
m = y1-y2

(Why "m" for "slope", rather than, say, "s"? The official answer is: Nobody knows.)
The subscripts in the formula above just indicate that there is a first point and a second point (that is, that there are two points); it is entirely up to you which point you label as "first" and which you label as "second". The important thing is that you subtract the x's and y's in the same order. For our two points, we get the following:
m= (-2)-(2) = -4 = 2

1) if given two points ( x1, y 1) , ( x2 , y2)
slope = ( y2-y1/ x2-x1)( diff of y / diff of x )
2) if given equation of straight line in from y = mx +c
then m is slope
3) if given equation of line in form ax + by + c =0
slope = -b / a ( -coeff. of x / coeff. of y )
4) if given angle between st line and x axis = B
slope = tan B
5) If given slope of another line L1 parallel to required line L2
slope L1 =slope L2

if you want to calculate slope it depends on what you are given in the problem , watch this carefully :
1) if given two points ( a , b ) , ( c , d)
slope = ( d-b) / (c-a) ( diff of y / diff of x )
2) if given equation of straight line in from y = mx +c
then m is slope
3) if given equation of line in form ax + by + c =0
slope = -b / a ( -coeff. of x / coeff. of y )

6) If given slope of line perpendicular to the req line
slope = - reciprocal of the given line

The gradient is the change in the y-axis, divided by the corresponding change in the x-axis.
So as an example, if your line goes through the points (1,3) and (5,7), then gradient is:
(7 - 3) / (5 - 1) = 4 / 4 = 1

a line y = m x + c the slope is m, ? what do you have... two points a=(x1,y1) b=(x2,y2) then y1=m x1 + c , y2 = m x2 + c so y1-y2=m (x1-x2) thus m = (y1-y2)/(x1-x2) this works when x1<>x2
