I live in a 6-story apartment building and this is by far the most uncomfortable I get throughout the day... being in an elevator with a stranger. It's like - do you even say anything? It's embarrassing because you both know you just hate the silence so you've got to say something but whatever you say you know the other person knows that you really don't even care. Luckily my 20-month-old daughter is usually with me so we just laugh at her until we finally get to the 5th or 1st floor.
I think we might talk about the weather which is so lame or we talk about where we're from and how long we've been here since we live in Okinawa, Japan on a military base.

I wouldn't be inclined to talk to a stranger in an elevator...but I guess the weather is a good ice breaker.
