Was it brand new or used? If it was used, you might have a model with an outdated DVD driver. Some of the older model PS2's can't play newer discs. If you purchase Sony's PS2 DVD Remote, it includes an update that will bring your DVD player up to spec and allow you to play movies.

Have you checked the "region" on the DVD? You might be trying to play an incompatible DVD on your system.

If you brought a brand new system and the DVD player isn't working, I suggest calling Sony and notifying them of the problem.

The driver might be out of date/from somewhere where it works badly compared to the never ones. The DVD might be to new for the old driver to read it. You might just want to trade it in.
