For current affairs the only thing is to look at the news papers or watch the news. Most newspapers are on-line so you don't need to buy all of them.

current PMs/Presidents of countries is always a good one, especially the ones in the news at the mo. It would shock people when they realise they don't know the heads of Iraq, Israel, Iran, etc. and the spelling can be quite fun for extra points :)
I also like the 'capitals', very topical.
celbrity gossip?? i can never keep up with who is dating who.
academy award multiple choice? best film, best actress etc.
