The standard deviation is a measure of the spread of values; so the smaller it is, the more correlated the data is.

It is the root-mean-square of the differences between each data value from it's mean.

Standard deviation is the measure that shows the displacement from the average. So if the data are grouped closer to the average st.dev. is smaller and vice versa.

Standard deviation is a measure of the dispersion of a set of data from its mean. The more spread apart the data is, the higher the deviation.

Mathematically it can be represented as:

s = Sqrt Sum{X_i-avg(X)}^2 divided by n-1
