To use a combat parallel, marketing people develop the strategy and sales people implement the strategy using their tactical knowledge. Marketing people are behind the lines determining the need to take that hill in order to be in advantageous position to leverage themselves for the rest of the war. The sales people take that hill.

Marketing people help sales people with ideas, approaches, advertising and media support. Sales people combine all that with their knowledge of their customers, with their ability to develop relationships, and with their persuasive skills.

Sales and marketing in the past was only vaguely distinguished with sales people eventually winding up in a headquarters marketing job, as if sales and marketing were one and the same. We're discovering that while sales people can offer insight into marketing strategies, they are best kept in the field doing what they're good at.

Today, marketing is using more scientifically proven methods to dice and slice the audience and to develop strategies that appeal to specific chunks of the market. That means they are using tools like statistics, data mining, etc to talor an approach that will work to satisfy the need of smaller segments of the market.

Marketing people are now working at alrger enterprises who can afford such an approach. Look for jobs in large consumer goods producers (such as Procter and Gamble, Ford), high tech firms (IBM, HP, etc), and internet retailers (Amazon, Overstock). However, small firms are beginning to realize they can't stay in business, unless they adopt a more aggressive marketing strategy.
