I have a 500GB SATA HDD Seagate External Hard Drive. I was backing up data yesterday and accidentally pulled the power plug halfway (it was still connected), then the drive stopped working and started making clicking noises. I tried to connect it to the computer again and no response. I did a little research and found that the drive is about to die so I have to take it to a professional to back it up.
Can someone please tell me how will it be done? I mean will the technicians fix the drive and send it back to me to backup the data, or will they transfer the data elsewhere to be sent back to me? and approximately how much should it cost? (I have approximately 400 GB of data stored on it). Also if anyone know a good technician in the NYC area, please do tell. Thanks!

Hi ineedanswersplease,

I don't like the sound of that. You may be right the drive may be going bad.

Before you spend money on recovery do this - If your drive normally lays flat turn it on it's side and if it normally sits on it's side lay if flat.

Drives are multipoise. That is they are designed to operate in either position - vertical or horizontal. They tend to wear in however ther are operated and changing the orientation often gets them going again.

Once it starts working I would recommend you back up your data in case it decides to quit on you.

Data recovery usually involves removing the platter and putting it into another unit. The cost varies all over the map and I hesitate to guess in NYC. You folks have awfully high prices.

Good luck,

Norm

If your hard drive is making a clicking noise, I would back up all my data now and buy a new hard drive. The clicking sound means your hard drive is failing and if you wait to long to back it up you may not be able to get your data off it.
