I have a co-worker who makes it very clear that she cannot stand me. I've never done anything to her. She has a reputation of being difficult; she was actually demoted because the people she supervised gathered together and reported her tyrant behavior to her boss. They stuck her in my department just over a year ago. After I pointed out an error that she made, she's had an attitude with me ever since...
How do you work with someone like this?

I would just continue to be professional, unless she does something that warrants her being reported. Everyone knows she has a problem; her being demoted has probably made her more difficult. Frankly, she may have a problem finding employment elsewhere.

Just remember that it has nothing to do with you; she's the one with the problem. Being anything but completely professional will hurt you and give her ammunition against you.

I think the best way to deal with these sorts are to take the higher ground...aka - don't go out of your way to be mean back to the person but instead be very pleasant and respectful no matter how she acts towards you. Clearly, difficult/rude co-workers have other personal issues going on (that doesn't make it right to act like a jerk but...) - so before you have to encounter this person - take a deep breath and think to yourself 'alright, she's going to be mean/rude so I better prep myself' and then maybe one day she'll surprise you and be nice. Lastly, if she does something very disrespectful - you should stand your ground. Don't feel bad about defending yourself, and if she does something really rude - you should definitely ask to meet with her privately and tell her what she did that offended you...you never know...maybe she doesn't realize how rude she really is...maybe she needs a reality check??? Good luck! One last thing...when she is rude - just let it go...the last thing you should do is go home and complain about her all night to your friends/family bc then you'll let her get the best of you. Remember - she must have some pretty crappy things going on in her own life that causes her to be so rude for not apparent reason.

DRIVE HER INSANE!

Create a new e-mail account with her name on yahoo or something and send it to her work e-mail address all day with random messages. You could include links about being too negative, gossiping at work, and whatever gossip you've heard her say about someone else, put it in the e-mail so she'll think someone knows that she's gossiping; this may straighten out the problem a bit!

If not, it will drive her crazy having e-mails coming in to her from herself! Use the computers at your local library.

If you don't feel comfortable doing that, start hanging up all kinds of positive messages, and the value of silence around your space.

It doesn't matter where you work, there's always one in the crowd. I find the best way to deal with it is to be nice to them and ignore their ego issue. The worse they are the nicer I am. For some reason they mellow out, to a point where you can tolerate them. Sometimes you have to confront them and let them know they're jerks and since you have to work together, tell them that you two have to make the best of it. The truth works too, sometimes.

Honey, turn it around. This is your moment to shine and show you can deal with difficult people. The company already knows she's a problem. Don't get sucked into her drama. She's on the way down and out, you, however, could really impress them by not getting sucked into the negativity and drama of this coworker. Rise above, be professional and it will be noticed.

Two things.............1) don't EVER tell someone about a mistake. If it's your co-worker it's none of your business if she doesn't know enough to proof-read and up to a supervisor to talk to her about mistakes and 2) talk to your immediate supervisor or boss who are the only 2 in the office who can speak to her about her behaviour. Or just do what I do with one of my co-workers, keep your mouth shut and ignore her.

A difficult situation for you. Associate as little as possible with her. When you do have to deal with her, stay just with whatever company business is. Don't feed into her. Eventually you will see her back, as she is escorted out the door.

I was always told to kill them with kindness. Sooner or later she is going to be gone, if they alrerady demoted her. Just be happy and try not to let her ruin your day. We all work with somebody like this. No matter what job, there is always that one jerk. When she comes up to you, walk away, pretend like you are on the phone, or just say Hello (name) how are you today, she will think you are up to something.
