Well you dont really OPEN this file within Windows.

It is a file to allow you to setup Ubuntu just like a windows XP CD. You will need to download it and burn the ISO image that it downloads to a CD. Then run the CD as you boot the machine.

If you check Ubuntu's site there are directions on accomplishing the setup.

Follow the instructions carefully. As it is another OS, it won't run from within Windows!

The easiest thing if you're having problems, is to get them to send you a copy - this is normally free of charge from Ubuntu. This includes the full OS and a "live" CD which lets you try it without installing it.

How are you trying to open the file? The file would be downloaded as an ISO file. You will need CD burning software and a CD burner to be able to do anything with it.
Are you sure that you want to install Linux on your computer? Are you going to dual boot it?

yeah the file must be an ISO file.
you can look at it using WinRAR (free trial version or premium) or maybe Win Zip might work to .
you need to burn it onto a CD with any software program that supports ISO files . if yours does not and just go to Cnet down loads and get the free ISO burner 1.1 . it was recommended to me by a friend (but i did not try it because of my Nero did it )
hope this helps

Ubuntu sends out free cds.

https://shipit.ubuntu.com/

It takes about six to ten weeks to come but its worth doing.

The file you downloaded should be a iso. If you are not sure how to burn a iso to a disc look at this site to learn how to: http://www.hiren.info/pages/how-to-burn-iso
