With 2 kids and 2 cats, our carpets get filthy pretty quickly. We usually hire a rug doctor but it is inconvenient to physically get it from our local shop. Hiring someone to clean our carpets is also pretty expensive.

So I am looking into buying a wet carpet cleaner. I can't see a lot of reviews on the internet on these though. Have you got one and does it work particualry well? Or avoid at all costs and carry on hiring the rug doctor? Any other alternatives?

Thanks to any potential answers.

Yup! worth the investment! Cats and dogs and muddy wellies. I have one that i keep in the garage, Bissell i believe, and it has been a god spend! All those little 'accidents' that happen, you can immediately suck the up liquid, then give it a good clean. Also has a hose attachement, so you can do the sofas, stairs etc. You can also now buy different solutions to put in the shampoo reservoir, so can get the original or scented with lavendar, or orange I believe. I also have one specifically for pet stains.

Is quite a shock when you empty it out at the end! lol! I have had this one quite a few years now, and never had a problem with it. Would say it does not get the carpets bone dry, and sometimes you have to put a lot of pressure on it, or go over the area a good few times to get it all sucked up, but they are worth the effort. Will probably work out cheaper in the long run, if you work out how much you spend on renting a couple of times a year or more, plus petrol to collect and return etc. You can buy the Bissell shampoo on idealworld shopping channel, usually in batches of three bottles, so can get that delivered to your door too!

You ask other alternatives... get rid of the kids and cats! lol! Alternative but not so nice, is to get rid of the carpet and get laminate, but you will still end up having to clean it is one someways, and you will then end up with dust bunnies being chased around the furniture!

Happy shampooing!

My mum bought one of those upright ones, that look like an ordinary upright vacuum cleaner, and I'm not impressed at all. It looks like it should be a whole lot easier than the usual carpet cleaner, but the bit at the front of the cleaner that sucks up the dirty water is only effective if it makes complete contact with the floor, ie, if the floor is 100% flat, which of course, not many are. So if its not making full contact with the carpet, a lot of the suction goes into sucking fresh air from above the carpet, so you end up with long stripes of wet dirty carpet. They really are a bad design. As for the normal cylinder ones with a hose and hand attachments, I'm a big fan, they're hard work but worth it. I would say ANY cylinder type is worth buying, because the concept is basically the same in all of them, but avoid the upright ones, they really are useless.

Our next door neighbours used to have an aquavac, this big orange thing. We had young cats who always used to make a mess everywhere. It really did the job, but is a bit of a hassle so you don't want to have to use it every time, got everything out and you could add detergent. Is probably best to have normal vac for weekly hoovering, aquavac for stain removal and yearly full clean. Then you will never have to get carpet cleaned again.

The thing about getting whole carpets cleaned by rug doctor is that once it is done, it just starts getting dirty again, so you need something in between... Get one!

Yes they work.
It would be a good investment for you if you equip yourself with one.
I've used the Bissell with very satisfactory results.
I believe Argos has it on offer.
However, I've heard that the Vax is even a better machine.

To really get the carpets cleaned, you need to hoover well before and after shampooing.

Yes they do work....

Buy a Bissel Pro-heat or a Hoover Brush and Wash

I couldn't live without my Brush and Wash but if it broke I would buy the Bissel as it is lighter.

I have a Kirby and it works really good. It dries amazingly fast. Since you have children the way it dries is a plus.

with that amount of filth you need to detail clean the vaccum itself after each vaccum or half way through each vaccum.
