You do not say in what country or state this occurred. It probably is not illegal for the store to take your information and to track your purchases unless they did it in a discriminatory manner. That means, as long as they ask everyone for identification when purchasing Nyquil, they are probably acting legally. I would make my purchases elsewhere.

It's because some crazy kids out there are getting high by drinking a bunch of cough medicine. Especially Robitussin DM, They get the high from the Dextromathoraphram ingredient in the cough medicines

And yes it is true that Nyquil has ephridine in it, that is not the reason the syrup is behind the counter. The PILLS with ephedrin or pseudoephedrine are kept behind the counter because of the Meth epedemic. Pills are the MAIN source for Meth cooks

Nyquil isn't illegal. In my area the purchase of Nyquil is not limited except by age....must be over 18.
I noticed that some answerers above claim that Nyquil has ephedrine in it. I can tell you first hand that it definitely does not because ephedrine is also known as ephedra. It isn't the same thing as pseudoephedrine. Nyquil at one time did contain pseudoephedrine, but now it doesn't. If it did I would not have been able to take it recently when I was ill because I'm allergic to pseudoephedrine.

The Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act of 2005 (CMEA) was signed into United States law on March 9, 2006 to regulate, among other things, retail over-the-counter sales of ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, and phenylpropanolamine products. Retail provisions of the CMEA include daily sales limits and 30-day purchase limits, placement of product out of direct customer access, sales logbooks, customer ID verification, employee training, and self-certification of regulated sellers.

Ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, and phenylpropanolamine are precursor chemicals used in the illicit manufacture of methamphetamine or amphetamine. They are also common ingredients used to make cough, cold, and allergy products. Passage of the CMEA was accomplished to curtail the clandestine production of methamphetamine.

However, Nyquil doesn't contain any of these chemicals so it doesn't fall under the restrictions. I am assuming that either you were buying a different brand or the store is misclassifying Nyquil.

Some over the counter cold medicine can be used to produce crystal meth. As a result, laws have been enacted to track who buys how much cold medicine, thus restricting your everday life due to the criminal element. Welcome to the new America, where you are guilty until proven innocent.

People use the base to make illegal drugs so they are trying to keep up with who is buying them. Its ridiculous but what can you do.

No, its that people buy over the counter medications to produce meth, so they will onlyl allow you to buy so much.
