Could you maybe do something with children or maybe with mentally challenged individuals? How about volunteering at something like being a big brother or sister or something along these lines?
How about teaching illiterate individuals to read and write?
How about something along the lines of medicine?
So there you have it, medicine, children, illiteracy. Geez, I hope I helped you get some ideas....
Good luck on the project.
It sounds like fun, with a lot of hard work involved...

The previous answers are good ones. I used to supervise similar school projects, and it is important to do something that you enjoy for that year. Otherwise, you'll get sick of it and miss the main point that service is a good thing. What are your interests?

*English--coordinate a monthly reading in the elementary schools event.

*history/politics--organize a monthly collection of needed items for servicepeople serving overseas. Check local churches to see if that is being done already. Perhaps they'll let you do it instead.

*environment--do a small-scale analysis of your school and find where new technology (like flourescent light bulbs) could save energy and money.

*religion--choose a church, pick a need (new sanctuary carpet) and raise money through pancake suppers or other events. (Note: some schools might shy away from a religious choice.)

*math--become a math tutor or tutor in elementary schools.

Checking with Boy Scout troops and finding what past Eagle Scouts have done might help, too. Helping with food pantries and soup kitchens works well also. Best wishes! Hope you let us know what you decide!

What about joing the army reserves after school for a year and see what they do, how you get in, etc. This would fit into the community and service program.

How about volunteering as a mentor or big brother/sister? Every neighborhoood has kids that could use a friend.
