Guppies die easily. So be carefull. They live for about 3-5 years.Mine will be 4 years in Aprill.

Secondly guppies may even mature in 2 months provided they are in a large tank and between 70-80 F.

In a clean warm tank with plenty of water changes and good quality food guppies often mature in 6-8 weeks and reach full size in 10-12 weeks. A tank raised guppy that is well cared for can easily live 2-3 years and often more.

In my opinion wild conditions play no role in the life span of the current fancy guppy in the hobby. They are far to different even genetically from wild guppies to draw reasonable connections.

1. The maturation and size of guppies is highly dependant upon their environment (particularly in nature), but with water temps in the 70s to 80s and good food they are mature in about 2 months.
2. IMO, guppies are 'annual' fish. They live in the wild about a year if not killed by predation. They have several differrent life cycles. A. If one is 'born' in the late Spring in good warming water, day light hours increasing and plenty of food, the fish matures quickly, spawns several times before the water chills and dies when late Fall or early winter drops its home water temps into the 50s. It dies because it cannot get enough food and because it has evolved to fit its environmental nitch. B. A guppy born very late in the Fall, does not grow or mature quickly, it lives in a sort of limbo in rotting material where there is additional heat but not growing because its food supply is very low. With the advent of Spring it quickly matures sexually, spawns and thus continues the species survival. C. One born in mid summer may or may not make it through the winter. IT would depend upon many variables but may survive until the next year. In tropical areas they do survive well. Of course guppies are very near the bottom of the food chain and millions are predated annually.
D. Aquarium guppies. With a lot of luck and excellent conditions they may live up to 3 years, most will die within a year because this is their evolved life cycle duration.
Good luck. Hint.... The better and more stable the conditions in which they are kept and the less medication used on them, the longer they live. Beyond 2 years none of the lovlier fish look very good (they get hump backed and lose finnage detail).
