Thanks to everyone for their tips on wireless broadband. Think we'll go for AOL as we get a free wireless router. One thing, according to the system requirements, we need an ethernet port (LAN). This is fine on the new computer we have but what do we look for on the back of our our old tower that's operating on windows 98 se?

many thanks!

I mean, what port am I looking for on the back of the tower? Is it the port where the current lead for dial-up plugs into?

Thanks

An Ethernet port will look like a standard phone jack but will be bigger and have 8 metal tabs instead of 2 or 4. If you see one card that has two phone jack looking ports on it side by side then that is your modem. If you see a card that has only one jack, insert a phone cord into it, if the plug is smaller then the jack then it is an Ethernet port and you should be good to go. If you do not have an Ethernet port on the computer, then you can purchase one of two types, an internal Ethernet card or a USB wireless card since you are getting a wireless router.

In all probability, your old tower has an Ethernet port. If not, you can get a cheap 10/100 Ethernet card for ~$10 >or less<. You will want to get a router or hub. If you choose a hub, you can get an Ethernet hub >4 port< for a little money. Then you plug the MODEM into the router or hub and connect your computers to the hub.

The dial-up port is RJ-11 this is a phone jack.
The Ethernet port looks the same but is bigger it is RJ-45.

If you older computer does not have it you will need to have a NIC (or Ethernet Adapter) installed.

Same sort of thing, just a NIC card; Only difference will be that you need Win 98 SE Drivers to get it going. So whatever card you choose ( And I mean this Broadly, since there are so many ) the card Should have a Win 98 Driver Available to you.

If you already have your wireless router connected to the newer machine then it depends what you need to connect the other machine to the network with for example my machine at home is connected via a USB device but other wireless routers require a wireless network card to be installed into the other machine.

this is the network card port - looks similar to the phone port (RJ11) just a little bit bigger. If you dont have one then you can purchase an additional card fairly cheaply (less than £15) that will do this for you.

It is in one of the PCI card slots on the back of the old PC or near the speaker ports.

It looks like an oversized by 50% (clear) telephone jack.
