female betta is male or female?

2007-03-20 00:57:22 · 4 answers · asked by daniel n 1 in Pets Fish

I bought a red female from a pet store in the mitst of a huge crowd of male crowntails, and when you look at her tail its a little pointy like a male crowntails. Im asking this because i bred her with a cleer male (double tail) and i was hoping to turn out with some crowntail fry.

If you are interested in breeding specific traits in bettas (like crowntail for example) you really need to buy superior breeding stock from established breeders. Pet shop fish usually have very poor genetics and there is no telling exactly what you will get, especially with the mixed bag of recessives and co dominants that influence tail shapes. Go ahead and spend the money to get really good breeding stock, you will be so glad you did.

females all have short tails, will have an "oviposter" on the underside of their belly, and have a rounded anal fin.

watch out for plakat males, they're short-tailed males, they will have no oviposter and a very pointed anal fin.

a female crowntail will have extended rays on their fins (obviously less so than male crowntails) giving her that "spikey" look.

edit: crossing DT (double tail) and CT (crowntail) can give you a bit of a mixed bag. were these both petstore fish? colourwise, cellophane (i presume?) and red will give you a lot of red fish, red is a dominant colour. tail type wise, DT is recessive so unless your CT has some DT in her somewhere, you may or may not get any DT, but in F2 if you spawned siblings you'll get more DT. with regard to the CT, this depends if your DT male has either VT (veil tail) parents or not. VT is a fairly dominant tail type, so if this is anywhere in their recent history you may get that with some crowning, otherwise known as combtail. Either way, you'll get more attractive offspring in F2 and F3 after you see the results of your F1 spawn.

As lengthy as they're the identical species like many of the different answerers are announcing. The pair might make lovely fry!! Please ensure to acclimate your feminine betta earlier to mating although in a right environment. Good Luck!

Go to google images and type in your requirements. Then compare the pix displayed to your fish. You'll know then.
